Carers Resources

What is a carer?

A carer is someone who looks after a relative, friend or neighbour who, because of illness, disability or age, cannot manage by themself at home.
Some carers care for a few hours a week, others are needed 24 hours a day, every day.

Am I a carer?

"I'm 15 years old and I live with my mum who has Multiple Sclerosis so before and after school I do most of the cooking and housework"
Am I a carer?

"My 37 year old son has been in and out of mental hospital for the last 15 years - when he comes out he usually ends up living with me as there really is nowhere else for him to go."
Am I a carer?

"Our 14 year old daughter has severe learning difficulties and can be aggressive which is a problem for other children - we also have a lot of broken nights. She goes to a special school but otherwise is at home all the time."
Am I a carer?

"My wife had a stroke 5 years ago and now I have to do everything for her, like feeding, washing and dressing her, which means I have had to give up my job as she cannot be left alone."

Practice Carers Lead

Nikki Wooden is the practice carers lead. If she can be of any assistance do not hesitate to call her on 01432354573.

Carers Week

Carers week 2017 is 12th - 16th June. We will be marking this with information in our waiting rooms.

The Carers Project

The Carers Project has been set up to raise the profile of Carers as a group of people with specific needs. In particular to identify the numbers of carers within the community so that their health and support needs can be better met by the statutory and voluntary services.

If you feel you are a carer then please let us know so that we may record the fact on your records. You can give details either directly at either surgery, by telephone, letter or fax.

Support for Carers

A large number of organisations exist to provide information on specific conditions and illnesses and can offer advice and support on dealing with these. Some links to local and national organisations can be found on our Resources Page
